This preliminary behavioural study on selected cichlid species from Lake Tanganyika was conducted during our field trip to Africa, organized and supported by the University of Graz and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christian Sturmbauer. The aim of this study was to find out whether the methods of transect line and snorkelling are viable options on a stony shore to observe territorial behaviour and frequency of male cichlids. The second objective was for us to become familiar with field surveying using the transect line method, which is commonly used in ecological and biological studies. The method was chosen due to its straightforwardness, repeatability and the fact that it should be an unbiased way of observation.
